Dan James Introduction

My background with intelligent buildings started with use of Revit. I have taken a few classes teaching the basics of Revit Architecture, MEP and Structural as well as few advanced aspects of each type. I currently work for a building controls company so I have a lot of exposure to how sensors and controllers communicate over a network to control HVAC equipment, lighting and building security.

My expectation for the course is to learn how technology influences design and operation of buildings.

Intelligent buildings are buildings that use technology such as BIM or networks during design and operation in order to make processes within the building more efficient. Examples could be building networks that operate HVAC systems or lighting systems based on need, in order to lower energy use; or use of BIM by designers to model the building and find conflicts between different specialties that can increase costs, such as ductwork intersecting beams in designs.
